850 Meters

A not-so-brave knight is on a quest for Fame and Fortune - legend says rescuing a princess is the way to go. And in those same fairy tales, there's only one way to slay the dragon that hold the fair lady captive : find the invincible sword. To reach his goal, the knight is ready to go far. Maybe even as far as 850 meters...

Impressive stuff from Honda who used real data from Senna’s 1989 McLaren-Honda to create this unique lap of Suzuka as a tribute. Yes, it was uploaded several months ago, but I've only just seen it.

How To Accept An Award : By Sacha Baron Cohen

Love the confusion of the A listers - is this real? What should I do?! Laugh? Help? Look like I'm happy he's won?

Bears Don't Hibernate, Squirrels Do

I don't like the advert, and I don't like the cover version (John Lewis, were you aware of Lily Allen's other comeback single?!). I do like this version from The Poke.

Internet Nostalgia : Modem Dial Up Audio

Ah the good old days of the dial up 56k internet, my favourite bit of the modem handshake was the double bounce, at around 13secs, before the white noise starts. Wonder what it all meant?

Oops

A cartoon cliche; find yourself stuck underwater on the bed of a lake, maybe chained to something? Simply pull out the plug and bingo, all the water disappears. Maybe it was something that influenced these engineers? What happens if we drill a little hole into the bed of a lake, above a massive salt mine? Hmmm..

Not to be confused with natural sinkholes, and nature's attempts to help Darwin Awards nominees; Would you stand here and carry on filming?

Or sit calmly in a boat when this is happening?

Nah, nor me.

#mydadhatedbritain *updated*

Fantastic responses on Twitter, as documented by The Guardian "One morning in 1994, my Dad had a croissant for breakfast #mydadhatedBritain" and if you haven't seen Alastair Campbell rip into the Daily Mail's deputy editor on Newsnight yet, do, it was superb. Alastair is petitioning for Daily Mail Editor Paul Dacre to with him or a professional broadcaster regarding his papers conduct over Milliband Snr, click on the link to sign it, it will be fantastic television. For the record, #MyDadHatesTheDailyMail

Huffington Post's Mehdi Hasan on Question Time gets one of the shows best reactions from both the studio audience and those at home with this reply;

It's a story that just won't go away. Dave must be furious that this has overshadowed his party conference speech.

Will It "Go Viral" : Steady Feathers - The Most Extreme Camera Ever

In advertising, "Virals" are mildly amusing or interesting pieces of content generated by marketeers, that are intended for people to share with their friends, and thus get some sort of brand message across to the viewer. Those Santander adverts do not fit into any of the above categories.

At some uncertified point, this spreading leads the content to be termed "Viral", or as some say it has "Gone Viral" - by the way, the spreading is usually helped by a large dose of advertising to help it along the way.

Once it has "Gone Viral" this can be added to a press release, and sent to a contagious group of online publications, who will simply paste the copy word for word, rip the video from YouTube, stick on their own advertising at the front, and host it as a news story. Unless, of course, it's obviously an advert (doh), but even then, the clever marketeers can get around this by adding another angle to the story, take this story "Leaked Samsung Commercial "Goes Viral" After Being Derided For Having 'The World's Worst Actors'" (Warning, it's in the Daily Mail)

However, Marketeers have to tread very carefully, as revealing their video to infact be an advert in disguise too early, will result in most savvy viewers switching off pretty much straight away, and those contagious online publications spotting something fishy. Daily Mail again.

Sometimes, brands are too cool for viewers to switch off, the message is blatant, the branding is all over the place - see anything by Red Bull, other than the bloke jumping to earth from space balloon.

In this video you'll notice the phone and camera don't appear until right at the end, the punchline / pay off / reveal. (Clever see, they've tricked us - it IS an ad for something, I thought it was REAL). Even though it has been posted on LG's official Mobile YouTube channel (there's a clue) most people infact will watch the video elsewhere. (Yes, like on this blog).

So, has Steady Feathers, uploaded 5 days ago by LG "Gone Viral" yet?

**Believe it or not, in the last 12 years I myself have been involved in making such videos, the first being the "Stop Bob" getting to No. 1 campaign, in which we had the cartoon characters from The Supermen Lovers video "Starlight" knocking over and killing Bob The Builder, burying him with Scoop the JCB. It was a flash video, made by Jim at Infinite Wheel and spread via Email as no social networks existed. After two days, the BBC kindly asked us to stop it. Unfortunately, Bob The Builder still went to No.1, and the now classic summer smash hit "Starlight" rested at No.2 - thanks The Record Buying Public. Others led to Sonny J getting played on Radio One and signed (it wasn't a rare Michael Jackson song) and the then 12th most discussed video of all time on YouTube, a Global Warning (made for Ministry of Sound) Usually, the best "viral" videos are user generated, have no advertising spend (this is termed "Organic") and no real gain for views, people genuinely share them because they liked them (that's ok) and think their friends will like them too (also ok - it's why I started this blog to be honest, to keep the stuff I like best.

U2 360 Full Concert - As Filmed By Fans

Ok U2 haters, ignore it's U2 - this is a complete concert, playing for over 2 hours, that consists of fan footage from shows all around the world, compiled and edited to a U2 live compilation of the tour and it's free. Unlike official tour videos, this one has the atmosphere and authenticity of actually being there, a fans eye view of the show. It's amazing and must've taken ages, hats off to you Mek Vox.

I remember 6 years ago proposing to do something similar for a well known ex Brit Pop band, only to have the idea scoffed at by the label, but yes, stolen along with other ideas and used for their tour DVD / album campaign. When I raised this, I was told very aggressively that they weren't mine and that "they aren't very original anyway". But, you know, I don't look back in anger.

Anyway, here's U22 - The Show Never Done on the website you can click to watch individual tracks, here's ("One")

Hove Festival 2013

My favourite festival, Hove Festival, Norway. Yes, I work at a festival in Norway, and I'm heading there this year straight after Glastonbury, I can't wait. I'm looking for to seeing, in no particular order; the scenery; the people; the fjord; the scenery; the 90 minute change overs (this year I will attempt to go for a swim in the fjord during one of these); the very light nights. But not the food we get onsite.

Freddie Mercury and David Bowie's Isolated "Under Pressure" vocals

These are the isolated vocals from Queen & David Bowie's track "Under Pressure".

Bumping into each other in Mountain Studios in Montreux, Bowie began to collaborate on a track by adding backing vocals, but then decided they should write a brand new one, which they did during a 24 hour booze and cocaine session.

‘When the backing track was done, David said, “Okay, let’s each of us go in the vocal booth and sing how we think the melody should go–just off the top of our heads–and we’ll compile a vocal out of that.” And that’s what we did.’ recalls Brian May. Some of these improvisations, including Mercury’s memorable introductory scatting vocal, would endure on the finished track. Bowie also insisted that he and Mercury shouldn’t hear what the other had sung, swapping verses blind, which helped give the song its cut-and-paste feel.

Not a huge Bowie or Queen fan, but found this story fascinating - read more about this track on Open Culture, and thanks to Bill from God Is In The TV for sharing

Festivals 2013

My festival season starts in two days, and takes me through to mid-September, from Radio One's Big Weekend, Glastonbury, a variety of festivals in Ireland, Reading, BBC Proms in Hyde Park - but my favourite, without a doubt, is Hove in Southern Norway.

This is Deadmau5 on "my" stage 2 years ago. Yep, purchased all his albums after this.

Could "The Final Countdown" Be The Most Covered Song On YouTube?

Probably no question that Europe's one hit wonder "The Final Countdown" is one of most instantly recognisable and catchiest songs ever written but could it be the most covered song on YouTube? One day probably, but they definitely have the widest variety, here's 10 of my favourites and fear not, no Kazoo's;

Anders Flanders's one man band version;

The metal marching band version by Blaas Of Glory;

Barbershop version;

Abba's Benny Andersson's version, on his accordian with members of his solo band (starts at about 50secs)

Speaking of accordian players *ahem*, this one also features a Tuba and a 'voice';

Symphony Orchestral version;

Big Band version;

Precision Chinese Marching Band version - drums sound epic on this;

The Empty Festival version - hardly surprising with this infamous attempt;

And if you'd like to play the hook on your Casio keyboard, here's how - and it only requires the right hand apparently;

And finally. The original in all its 80's glory - I'd forgotten all the behind the scenes footage of the 'making of the video' in the video itself, wonder what the budget was for the pyros at the start, or are they fire extinguishers? 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. *cut to director* GO.

Moon Landing Was A Hoax. Not.

Did they fake going to the moon? Nope, not according to this chap. Interesting take on the whole conspiracy thing.. "by the late 1960's they did have the technical ability to send three men to the moon and back, they did not have the technology to fake it on video".
